Cherisse Scott is a genre-defying vocalist, songwriter, musical theater actor, and storyteller whose sound is rooted in soul and expands across R&B, jazz, and gospel traditions. With a voice that carries both velvet warmth and lived truth, she does not simply sing—she summons, creating sonic experiences that are as intimate as they are expansive.
A Detroit native, shaped creatively by Memphis and Chicago, Cherisse draws from a deep lineage of storytelling through poetry and song. Classically trained and grounded in the expressive traditions of the Black church, she has cultivated a performance style that blends narrative, emotion, and presence—where each note feels lived, not just performed.
Her early work established her as a compelling songwriter, earning a nomination for Best Songwriter at the Chicago Music Awards for her debut project Moans (2003), followed by Soul Journey (2008). In 2022, she released Who I Am, further solidifying her evolution as an artist and expanding her reach to audiences across the U.S. and internationally, including London, Tokyo, and South Africa.

Often described as “soul like we remember it,” her sound is anchored by a rich alto tone and an effortless ability to move between genres, fusing classic soul sensibilities with contemporary storytelling.
Cherisse has shared the stage with a dynamic range of artists, including The Roots, Erykah Badu, India.Arie, Kim Burrell, Gregory Porter, Mary Mary, Hezekiah Walker, and Eric Roberson. She is also a contributing artist with The Black Monks of Mississippi, a multidisciplinary collective curated by Theaster Gates that merges art, spirituality, and community engagement.
Beyond the stage, Cherisse is a nationally recognized social justice leader and human rights advocate. Rather than separating these worlds, she moves fluidly between them—allowing her artistry to hold complexity, truth, and responsibility without limitation.
At her core, Cherisse Scott is an artist of depth and duality—where soul meets story and voice meets vision. Whether on stage, in the studio, or in intimate performance spaces, she delivers work that is raw, resonant, and unmistakably her own.
She does not perform the music—she becomes it.
